City and County Budgeting for What Works Sprint - Fall 2026

Thank you for your interest in the City and County Budgeting for What Works Sprint! This 6-week virtual learning opportunity, hosted by Results for America, will help you align your budget with key results, embed evidence into budget proposals and decisionmaking, and help enhance how your budget is communicated. You’ll work with experts to develop actionable strategies that ensure your budget decisions deliver meaningful results for residents.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Your city or county’s commitment and capacity to embed evidence into the budget process; and 
  • Executive sponsor support and engagement.

Baseline City and County Information

The data collected in this section is intended to understand your county’s current budget process and evidence practices. It does not affect acceptance into the City and County Budgeting for What Works Sprint.  



Executive Sponsor Support and Project Team

This application requires two teams members be identified: 

  • Executive Sponsor: Executive leadership (e.g., CAO, City/County Mayor, City Manager, County Executive, County Manager, or Finance Director/Budget Director). This individual must be aware and supportive of participation in the sprint, but is not expected to attend sessions. 
  • Project Director: Key leader or staff members within the budget or financial office. This individual should have the authority and/or ability to lead the development and adoption of an evidence definition as well as authorize or facilitate systemic changes to the way this definition is built into the city or county’s budget process. This participant is a core project member expected to attend all five sessions and will serve as a primary point of contact during the sprint.
Who will serve as the project Executive Sponsor? Elected official or jurisdiction executive (e.g., CAO, City/County Mayor, City Manager, County Executive, County Manager, or Finance/Budget Director). This individual is aware and supportive of participation in this Sprint, but is not expected to attend sessions.




Who will serve as the Project Director?
Executive, director, or key leader within the budget or financial office. This individual should have the authority and/or ability to lead the development and adoption of an evidence definition as well as authorize or facilitate systemic changes to the way this definition is built into the city/county’s budget process. This participant is a core project member expected to attend all five sessions and will serve as a primary point of contact during the sprint. 




Identify other project team members 

At least one, but preferably two or more, additional staff members (budget or other key decision makers) are recommended to join the Project Director for sprint sessions.
